Top Liverpool University graduate wins law firm prize

A law student from Singapore, who gained a first class honours degree from the University of Liverpool, has been awarded the Student of the Year prize sponsored by Merseyside law firm, Lees Lloyd Whitley.

The success of Juliana Yuanshan Kho, 21, is particularly outstanding because she was also working to fund her education while studying, following the unfortunate death of her father six months into her law degree.

Professor Anu Arora, Dean of the University of Liverpool Law School and Juliana’s Personal Tutor, nominated her for the award.  Professor Arora was particularly impressed by the way Juliana managed to balance the need to support her studies financially with a determination to achieve academic success.  She was one of only five students to be awarded a first class honours degree by Liverpool University this year.

“Our congratulations to Juliana on her remarkable achievement in the face of very difficult personal circumstances,” said Lees Lloyd Whitley partner Frank Rogers.  Together with the firm’s HR director, Chris Blackburne, he presented the Student of the Year Award to Juliana.

“The Liverpool Law School makes a major contribution to training the lawyers of the future, and we are very pleased to recognise the achievements of an outstanding law student like Juliana,” he added.

Juliana received the Lees Lloyd Whitley prize at a special ceremony arranged by the Law School before she left the UK to attend interviews with Singapore law firms for a pupillage.  She was also awarded the Dean’s Prize for contributing greatly to the life of the Law School during her period of study.

This is the second year the firm has given the prestigious award to the Law School’s top graduate.  Lees Lloyd Whitley launched the prize in recognition of its close links with the University and its commitment to encouraging the development of young lawyers.
